Book Loving a Warrior: A Navy Seal Gay Romance Review :

I do not give out five stars lightly. I loved this book so much. It was very different from Point Of Contact, which was a tremendously popular book. I liked Loving a Warrior even better. I was completely involved the whole time, never bored or coasting through a page. Matt and Shane were fascinating characters with a great dynamic. It was almost a love / hate relationship at times, certainly competitive, but respect and caring was also present in spite of the constant snark. They dealt with a lot heavy issues together, and made each other into better men.I love reading romance, and I only read romance. I get so aggravated when the focus is off the romance that I usually don’t even enjoy romantic suspense much. Even though this book is very heavy on the BUD/S experience, I felt like it showed how everything they went through further developed their relationship, which is what my favorite romance novels do. The story takes some unexpected turns, and I appreciated that Melanie Hansen didn’t take the easy route. Some may consider this book a HFN, but I would call this a realistic HEA. These men are completely committed to each other, and we have a good idea of what their future is like. I thought it was perfect.I did NOT receive an ARC. I chose to read this book, bought it, and loved it!
It took a bit to get into the book but once I did I was invested. The detailed description of BUD/S training was gripping and more than once I was holding my breath awaiting the outcome. The MCs, Matt and Shane, were characters who both had walls up and emotional baggage. Their journey to a relationship was a tough but satisfying read. By the end I was rooting for them hard, wanting things to work out for them. It was cathartic seeing them let down the walls and finally fully open themselves up to each other. There are some story points that needed more depth and the end felt rushed and kind of incomplete. The preview of the next book, which is a m/f book does mention Matt but I’m not sure what kind of role he plays or if we will get more detail on his and Shane’s life. I really wish there was a more solid ending or an epilogue five years down the road.
